Changes To Ontario's Sex Ed Curriculum Sparks Fiery in Parents

Hello,  Every time I start my blog  I feel like Adele By the way she is my favorite   Its you Girl JA Nursing here, So the Topic of the week, day and for next several months will be the New Sex Education In Ontario, But the question is Why!  a couple of months ago I was involved in The Excellence Conference West   of which I was part of a group that spoke to the importance of parents understanding  Ontario’s New Sex-Ed Curriculum.  The mission of this panel was  for parents to  Learn the facts, dispel the myths,  and share their concerns, and strategies to move forward with peace of mind. In today's news as promisded at the Excellence Confirerence Peel is  honoring what they said about  providing a “factual” guide for parents regarding the controversial sex education curriculum.


as cited in the Mississauga news today   We believe it is important for parents to make an informed decision about the revised HPE curriculum. The guide is very helpful in that decision-making process," he said.
Translated versions of the guide will be available in Arabic, Chinese, French, Gujarati, Hindi, Punjabi, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu, Vietnamese and of course English.

I sigh..... thank God my children are 21 and 15,   because I think I would catch a case if this was me, Would I really? The answer is NO.  Today in the News parents have started  protesting  and some have opted to take their kids out of school for a week.  The TDSB has made it clear that the children will STILL BE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL the  WORK MISSED. Is that  fare?

Through my observation I have noticed that the Parents protesting are from various cultural and religious  back grounds, baring in mind that culturally this type of conversation would not be accepted in their native country. However, being Canadian born, but raised in A typical Jamaican house I can appreciate the differences in opinion.  Premier Kathleen Wynne has vowed that the updated curriculum will be in place for the start of the school year in September.  In other words, Parents get your pen and paper this bill is coming.

I have heard parents talking about home school, private school but for your information all schools have to follow the Ontario guidelines for curriculum. I undewrstand that this  244 page Health and Physical education PDF can be a bit much for the average parent, especially when there is critical parts that really Piss parents off 

The Opposition has complained that  the government did not consult enough parents before introducing the revised sex ed curriculum, which Wynne has said will not be changed before being implemented. Bold statement. So what is the deal?

The last update to Ontario's sex education curriculum was in 1998. That's almost 20 years ago. Middle-school children didn't have smart phones and social media back then.  Instagram, twiter, Snap chat, sexting and Tinder,  and Facebook were not  part of our children s daily routines.


Grade 2 students will learn about the stages of development and related bodily changes along with the concept that "no means no," as well as some elements of verbal and physical violence.

By Grade 3, students will learn about same sex relationships, while lessons about changes associated with puberty will move from Grade 5 to Grade 4.

Students in Grade 6 will learn about masturbation and "gender expression," while kids in Grades 7 and 8 will discuss contraception, anal and oral sex, preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.



 The last update to Ontario's sex education curriculum was in 1998. That's almost 20 years ago. Middle-school children didn't have smart phones and social media back then. Snap chat, sexting and Tinder were not part of the landscape. And puberty is starting earlier than ever now -- at age 7 and 8 for some girls.

It's definitely time to update the curriculum. But what should be included?  and What is appropriate? The curriculum development included input from consultants, educators, parents and students. Some of the highlights are:

1. Grade 3 students will learn about same sex couples and homosexuality;

2. Grade 6 classes will learn about puberty, masturbation and gender identity;

3. Grade 7 students will be taught sexually transmitted diseases (including oral and anal sex).

Our schools are expected to reflect our culture. Gay marriages are legal. If a student has their two moms or two dads dropping them off at school and attending the class concert, why not make sure the language in the textbooks and curriculum reflect the experience of children in an accurate way?
Bullying rates are higher for the LGBTQ  students, and recommendations from all anti-bullying programs is to have LGBTQ committees and clubs to help educate others who have prejudice. We know prejudice is taught, so, why not conquer ignorance proactively by discussing gender identity in the early grades? If a school will take disciplinary actions against a student for making personal attacks about a fellow student's sexual identity, have the curriculum reflect understanding and acceptance of difference, too.

LGBT Terms and Definitions. Here are some of the words and acronyms that are commonly used in American English for LGBT issues. LGBT, LGBTQ, LGBTQA, TBLG: These acronyms refer to Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer or Questioning, and Asexual or Ally.


We have decades of data that shows that kids do not become promiscuous or confused when they get sexual education. Quite the opposite. Education increases their safety. It has a protective effect to their mental and physical health. Students make better decisions and there is a reduction in disease, prejudice and sexual misconduct.




So what is your responsibility as a Parent?  .... Talk to your kids that's the  first answer.  Sharing my personal experience I was a teen Mother, without this new curriculum.  So I know that it's not the curriculum that will alter outcomes for your children, It is the lack of knowledge that will alter outcomes.  We have to all learn as Parents to start the conversation at home first.  VALUES and Your families individualized value system,  and the importance of  Individual Self Worth is what's important.  Including having continued conversations regarding your families cultural and religious believes,   will help your child understand that individuals do have the rights to be themselves, while  learning  to develop healthy relationships.  But when  is the Right Time? that will continue to be the question for many.

Multiple Sclerosis A story to Tell The 2nd Annual Dinner May 2 2015

Hey it's your Girl JA Nursing here, When asked to be a part of this event it was a no brainier.  Last year  May 4 2014  to be exact , I was invited to be a speaker  for   Life's Poetry Author Josephine Casey. 

I  received a phone call outlining that her young sister age 17  Tionna had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis  (MS).  When Josephine expressed  the need to host a Fundraiser for her Sister Tionna,  I knew it had to be done.  

The Passion behind  Life's Poetry   and it's overall symbolic meaning. My hats go off to Josephine Casey for her dedication to share awareness about (MS) Multiple Sclerosis and share  Life's Poetry

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an 

unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system which is composed of the brain and spinal cord. The disease attacks the
myelin which is a protective covering wrapped around the nerves of the central nervous system. This disease can cause various symptoms or little symptoms but bear in mind that most serve would include balance and mobility issues that can cause a person to be wheelchair bound.

For years, I have assumed  that  those from a  African decent  are less likely to develop Multiple sclerosis (MS),   but a new study suggests the opposite may be true.

"This is a disease that affects all racial and ethnic groups," the researcher told Reuters Health.

"If somebody comes in with symptoms that are suspicious for MS particularly blacks, we now know that theses symptoms should be taken seriously and proper work up should be done. 

This factor also goes to say that as individuals we also have to be aware  and not assume that it can't possibly be MS because your the wrong race or ethnicity.

Looking back, being in High school was a time of challenges stemming from acceptance, what's your next step and for myself it was teen pregnancy. 

Wow being pregnant in high school  at 17 felt like the  biggest challenge that I would face.  The strength of a warrior  my friend  who at 17  had a bigger challenge, a illness  with a incurable title.

THE STORY OF RUTH THE WARRIOR

West Humber Collegiate a school in Toronto's West End has brought forth some real fighters who today 20 years latter have made a way to show exceptional strength. High School full of struggles but none like what my schoolmate had to face. Back then in the 90's illness and disease were words unknown to us teenagers except for a dear friend named Ruth, who had to face the journey of being diagnosed in High School with MS at the age of 17. Guess the stats are correct ;Multiple sclerosis is a complex disease which is most often diagnosed in young adults, aged 15 to 40. MS is unpredictable SMH  or shake my head.  Back then all the challenges like teen pregnancy, drugs, partying, skipping school seemed quite minor compared to being duagnosed with MS.  I would clapp my hands right now, for the Strength that Ruth has Shown. Being able to join theses too to create  something positive brings me joy.  The union of a strong survivor of Ms and a new warrior of Ms would be the ideal situation of bonding strengths. The purpose of May 2 2015.

Who SHOULD talk about the BIRDS And The BEE's WITH YOUR CHILD?

I had to weight in on this topic.  I know many lesbian couples and gay couples  and at this point in my life especially as a health care provider It doesn't matter to me. Be Happy. That's what matters.

 On February 23rd Kathleen Wynne's Liberal government finally posted the supposedly "new" sex-ed curriculum online, after keeping it secret for months.  The sudden change in plans by the Wynne government, which had previously said the curriculum would not be made available online for several more weeks, saw it unveiled the day before a planned protest at Queen's Park. A primary motivation of Kathleen Wynne's with this timing was surely to get ahead of the story that a parental protest was likely to generate.
The question  will always be  how much do we need our children need to know?  or  and who do you think is responsible to start the conversation regarding any topic or subject?  This blog is a urban platform to address topics of the city.

A IS FOR AUTISM AWARENESS

One of the common  complaints that I hear from parents is their frustration with navigating  the healthcare system. As your advocate, it is very important to promote knowledge and awareness daily.  Early detection is the key  when handling   any health issue.  It is very important to help you identify ways in which you can navigate the healthcare and social system more effectively.  April is known as Autism awareness  month,  April 2, 2016, was celebrated as  World Autism Awareness Day. Thousands of landmarks, including the CN tower went Blue to raise global awareness about autism spectrum disorder.  With the May 2013 publication of the DSM-5 diagnostic manual, all autism disorders were merged into one umbrella diagnosis of ASD. Previously, they were recognised as distinct subtypes, including autistic disorder, childhood disintegrative disorder, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger syndrome.


 According to  Autism Canada  Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex neurobiological condition that can affect the normal function of the gastrointestinal, immune, hepatic, endocrine and nervous systems. It impacts normal brain development leaving most individuals with communication problems, difficulty with typical social interactions and a tendency to repeat specific patterns of behaviour.  Some persons with ASD excel in visual skills, music, math, and art. Studies also show that autism is four to five times more common among boys than girls. An estimated 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism.  There is no standard “type” or “typical” person with an Autism Spectrum Disorder but being able to recognize early signs is the key to early diagnosis.  Presently, we do not have a medical test that can diagnose autism. For this reason, parents should pay attention to their child’s social and language skills as well as their child’s play skills and body movements. -

Autism awareness has drawn attention in Jamaica as well, Autism and other disorders can be misunderstood if parents are not aware of what needs to be done to help their children strive. Taken from an article in the Jamaican Observer as a Mother of autistic child vents her frustration

 "Sometimes mi frustrated. Sometimes mi feel fi lef him and just make them kill him in a Bay (Montego Bay) because mi tired of it! To deal with this no easy you know, lady, and fi know seh you have to go deal with it for the rest of your life?!"

Davidson explained that her son was diagnosed with autism — a lifelong brain disorder that affects the way a person communicates and relates to people around them — after many tests which began soon after she discovered that at age two, he was still not speaking.

Her son Christopher Clarke was seven when he was diagnosed as autistic at the psychiatric ward at Cornwall Regional Hospital.

"But the doctor didn't tell me what is autism. Is somebody where mi used to live did have a 'doctor dictionary' and she look up the word autism and tell me say it mean the delay of everything," Davidson said. "But mi still never know nothing 'bout autism. But mi stay with him and try with him. It was at the age of 10 that I took him out of diapers after I read a book on autism. To show you that I am working with him," she said.

As a Nurse from a Jamaican background, this story can be the story for many regardless of your cultural background. The alliance between families and providers is the key to supporting your child’s progress, but  this can be difficult for parents who have limited English proficiency or lack the knowledge and skills to access systems of care successfully.  I have always stated that It is very important for care  providers to use cultural  competence  in identifying early signs of ASD and making appropriate referrals for diagnosis and treatment. According to The Mother Company,  the average age at which a child is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder in the United States is around four years old, most parents who ultimately get a diagnosis report having  concerns about their child’s development or behavior by the time the child is just 18 months old.  

Kudos to   Chief Saunders  of the Toronto Police  who had his son  with him at his  May 28, 2015  swearing in ceremony.

Chief Saunders says he has learned a lot from his son, mostly about listening. When you’re dealing with autism, he discovered, you have to listen to what a person means, not what he says.

“When you come home from school and say, ‘This is the worst day in my life ever. I wish I were dead,’ that translates into ‘I had a bad day’ or ‘I had a bad encounter with so and so.’ 

The chief says he learned to do things like say that he himself had suffered through a bad day or an angry encounter and that he felt bad about it. That could help the talk along.

It is no secret that health literacy increases when families understand the care needed for themselves or their children. Every child develops differently, however  understanding healthy milestones in child development is  used to help Parents and Doctors see if children are developing accordingly. Remember not every delay calls for a trip to the Doctors. But be aware. One thing that I insist on, is being  persistent  when you require medical attention of any kind. Check to see if your child is achieving these typical milestones at each age level:

By 3 to 4 months
Watches faces with interest and follows moving objects
Recognizes familiar objects and people; smiles at the sound of your voice
Begins to develop a social smile
Turns head toward sounds

By 7 months
Responds to other people's emotions
Enjoys face-to-face play; can find partially-hidden objects
Explores with hands and mouth; struggles for out-of-reach objects
Responds to own name
Uses voice to express joy and displeasure; babbles chains of sounds

By 12 months/1 year
Enjoys imitating people; tries to imitate sounds
Enjoys simple social games, such as “Gonna get you!”
Explores objects; finds hidden objects
Responds to “no”; uses simple gestures, such as pointing to an object
Babbles with changes in tone; may use single words (e.g., dada, mama, uh-oh!)
Turns to person speaking when his/her name is called.

By 24 months/2 years
Imitates behaviour of others; is excited about company of other children
Understands several words
Finds deeply-hidden objects; points to named pictures and objects
Begins to sort by shapes and colours; begins simple make-believe play
Recognizes names of familiar people and objects; follows simple instructions
Combines two words to communicate with others, such as “More cookie?”

By 36 months/3 years
Expresses affection openly and has a wide range of emotions
Makes mechanical toys work; plays make-believe games
Sorts objects by shape and colour and matches objects to pictures
Follows a 2- or 3-part command; uses simple phrases to communicate with others, such as “Go outside, swing?”
Uses pronouns (I, you, me) and some plurals (cars, dogs)

By 48 months/4 years
Cooperates with other children; is increasingly inventive in fantasy play
Names some colours; understands concepts of counting and time
Speaks in sentences of five to six words
Tells stories; speaks clearly enough for strangers to understand
Follows three-part commands; understands “same” and “different”

By 60 months/5 years
Wants to be like his/her friends; likes to sing, dance, and act
Is able to distinguish fantasy from reality
Shows increased independence
Can count ten or more objects and correctly name at least four colours
Speaks in sentences of more than five words; tells longer stories

 If you suspect  that your child or someone you know  has  autism spectrum disorder, please consult with your family Doctor, a developmental pediatrician. Neurologist, Psychologist. As your advocate. I am able to help you navigate the system as well as help you understand the signs that you should be reporting to your physician. Remember you are the most important part of your health care team.

Hi its your girl JA Nursing  with your  Social Buzz for the week with the most anticipated Radio interview by our friends over at G98.7fm The Grapevine hosted by   Mr Fitzroy Gordon  sat  down With Mr Curt Barry.  The contents of this interview may evoke many emotions, however it is in public interest to have all sides of the story addressed.  As Social Advocate I work with many people who have ben given a unfare exchange by the justice system, and I feel that it is part of the title to advocate for all especially when I know how many children have been effected by this injustice with the system.

In my  first blog about the tragic passing of Elijah, I had some concerns about the circumstances behind the incident. It is not my place to judge however one thing I do know for certain is that as a Social Advocate/ Health care professional  I have worked with many Men like Mr Curt Barry that have been given a unfair chance in our justice system.  This factor becomes more scary when children are displaced from unfit homes and bit into Foster care rather than mending a family with A Father that is capable to care for a child in all ways needed.   

As well, I  have worked with many Mothers Like myself who cant seem to get the Justice system to work at all. Case in question. Once the father decides not to work then support can not  be enforced. But for today's topic we will speak About how Men can regain some rights.

I think its wrong to deprive a child of either one of their Parents especially when a Parent wants to see their children.

We all know that the ratio is more common  to have  Women  chasing the Father. However when you have a case where the Father is chasing the child it has proven to

 most often end up in a tragic scenario  as seen  with Little Elijah Marsh.

Few points to understand here, I always tell people that this Justice System is not even designed for women. I personally have a case outstanding with FRO otherwise known as The  Family Responsibility Office. 

 

I always say that it is quite offensive for Mother's like myself to call FRO repeatedly,  inorder to have some sort of action take place, While you have Fathers like Mr Barry who are paying the support with out gaining proper access.

Many may wonder why Should I go into this, Well  as   your Social Advocate issues like this pass through my day regularly. Social literacy effects Health literacy. The end results of both situations can lead to  tragic outcomes.

 

What can be done to equal the field?   leave   a  comment

 How do we Change the Justice System to treat individuals  in a manner that reflect their actions ?

  The long and short of this is that If both children had been given the exact access from the Family Justice system  this incident could have been avoided.

A life is a big price to pay when equality of rights is involved I hope this truly sets A precedent for future case brought before the courts.

 

RIP Elijah Marsh this Post is not to take away from the Pain that all Members of the family may feel. This post is to examine relationships, the system and the unfortunate casualties, The children

To the family of Elijah Marsh, we are mourning with you with everything we have. Our hearts are heavy. We ache for you.

   I just used this look up to see how much Child support I should be getting and according to this look up they stated I get $0. Now isn't that the luck of the draw when Fathers decide not to work or  choose to work under the table no enforcement is applied.  That will be another blog when we tackle Social Advocacy a Mother's story.
