"The Disease of a 1000 Faces” May Is Lupus Awareness Month

Original post-Jan 13-2014

Hello all let's welcome  May with some knowledge. Last year I was asked to write about Lupus. The request came from a friend in Jamaica. Lupus has  become a disease that is affecting  individuals in our  own community more often than you know.  May is  Lupus awareness Month and like all illnesses, I will continue to share information and encourage awareness and support for those living with Lupus and other health issues.

No one knows for sure what is the cause of lupus, but  What we do know is that, in lupus, the immune system (the body’s defense against viruses and bacteria) is unable to tell the difference between intruders and the body’s own tissues. Trying to do its job, it attacks parts of the body, causing inflammation and creating the symptoms of lupus.Until science fully understands how the immune system works, the specific cause of lupus remains unknown. As your advocate is is very important for you to understand the necessity surrounding explaining your symptoms properly to your Doctor. Persistence is the key when navigating the health care system. It can change your health care outcomes significantly.  Symptoms are the only signs that Doctors have to work off of when trying to treat you or diagnose you. One of the common issues that I find is people trying to do it on their own.  Often I will hear, " I looked up  the information up on the internet" or "I'm going to see someone in alternative medicine like a naturopath" or even I will often here "oh my Friend told me" let's not forget the ever famous "I'll keep praying" but there is no  greater disesase than lack of Knowledge.   Lupus  symptoms vary from person to person and can include fatigue, joint pain, swelling, rashes, and fever. And since no two cases present exactly alike, lupus is notoriously misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis, a virus, or something else. The condition can harm the skin, kidneys, heart, nervous system, blood cells, for this reason it is dubbed  "The Disease of a 1000 Faces.”

Despite being a disease doctors often miss lupus  this is actually quite common.  According to  Health.com About 1.5 million people in the United States have it and it is estimated  that it affects over 1:1000 Canadians. The use of an  health care advocate can help you through any journey that involves  tackling the health care system.

With lupus attaching itself to many ethic groups I just wanted to let you know that you are not alone.  I myself used to think  that Lupus was  not a "Black Disease"  until I learned, that Rapper Trick Daddy and many other celebrities  suffer from Lupus.
“I went to the doctor like 12 years ago. He took all kinds of tests, because I was trying to get rid of what we call dry skin,” said Trick. “She did biopsies and blood tests and swab tests. She told me I have lupus. I am allergic highly to the sun, that’s my worst enemy. It’s like an AK-47 with a double clip on it. I could jeopardize kidney and liver failure from the treatment and the medication.” Trick daddy

Lupus is not contagious and is not related to AIDS or cancer. It belongs in the family of diseases that includes rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, juvenile diabetes, and scleroderma. The most common type of lupus is SLE (systemic lupus erythematosus). It is a complex and baffling condition that can target any tissue or organ of the body.  There are other types of lupus which mainly affect the skin, Discoid lupus typically causes sores on the face and scalp but can affect the skin anywhere on the body. It can also cause hair loss. People with discoid lupus are often sensitive to ultraviolet light.  Discoid lupus erythematosus lesion is seen  on the face of musician Seal   A few individuals develop drug-induced lupus as a response to some medications used to treat other conditions. These symptoms disappear when the person stops taking the medication.

Anyone can: women, men, children. Between the ages 15 and 45, eight times more women than men get lupus. In those under 15 and over 45, both sexes are affected equally.

When veteran rapper Snoop Dogg’s then 11-year-old daughter Cori was diagnosed with Lupus nearly 4 years ago, he and his wife, Shante Broadus, had never heard of the fatal disease that affects more than 1.5 million people.
“Shante and I cried 1,000 times” Snoop told People Magazine.
"She's the toughest little thing I've ever met," the rapper says of his daughter. "She's on the honor roll, playing volleyball and softball, living life. She has all this joy. In the beginning, lupus was winning. But now Cori is."    They say

Women of color are two to three times more likely to develop lupus than Caucasians. For the treatment to be successful, it is important that the treatment should be started early in the disease. Early diagnosis is essential.

DID YOU KNOW?
“Hispanics are two to three times more likely to be diagnosed with Lupus, Hispanic women tend to develop symptoms at a much earlier age compared to other women. Recently, singer Selena Gomez made headlines when it was rumored she delayed tour events due to a flare-up of the condition.

“Selena has been going full throttle the past few years and her Lupus is really catching up with her right now,” a source told Popdust. “She knows that she needs to take some time to address the disease and look after herself better if she wants to live a full and healthy life.”

Gomez, who is 21-years-old, has been living with lupus since her late teens

Patients with Lupus should eat a diet low in sugars and carbohydrates, low in fat, high in fibre and with moderate amounts of protein. Patients who reduce their intake of red or white meat (including chicken) in favour of fish and plant proteins do better. Abundant Omega-3 supplements are advisable, 3,000mg being the minimum. Smoking is an absolute no. Exercise is encouraged for various reasons. Apart from the beneficial effects on the cardio-vascular system, it also counteracts the insomnia many Lupus patients  often suffer from.

Entertainer and TV personality Nick Cannon announced in 2012 that he has lupus.  Since then, he has chronicled his battle against lupus through his online videos, in the media and at personal appearances.  Nick served as the Grand Marshal for the Lupus Foundation of America's Washington, DC Walk to End Lupus Now event on April 19, 2014, and after participating in the walk, along with 4,000 other people, he sat down for a brief interview to discuss how he is living with lupus.

Such power full Words by Jalesa in Pride News Magazine   Find the full interview below

Pride News Magazine: What would you like to see happen?
Jalesa Martin: In regards to Lupus awareness, I would definitely love to see more people learning about Lupus, not just as a disease, but also about the immense effects that it has on the body. When I tell people that I have lupus, I get one of two answers: “What is that?” or “But you don’t look sick!” One thing I would love for people to be informed about is that, Lupus is an invisible illness that does not always have external effects on the body.
Although we don’t look sick, many things are going on inside our bodies and causing us pain internally. I would also love for new treatments to be developed which have less long-term side effects on people with Lupus.

Find Out Why Should Be ADDING OATMEAL TO YOUR LIFE

It's only fair to share...Tweet about this on TwitterPin on PinterestShare on Google+Email this to someoneShare on Facebook

Happy Nutrition Month to you all   it's your Girl JA Nursing  here, you know it's winter when the porridge starts bubbling in my Kitchen. As your Advocate, I am constantly searching for ways to keep you knowledgeable. Remember Lack of Knowledge Is a Disease

If you are from a West Indian  background  you know all about #OATs,  Oatmeal the Almighty Stamina ingredient, but check out the other great benefits of eating oatmeal.  As we Move into March lets remember that March is  National Nutrition Month. One of the most  comment questions asked   is  whether  oatmeal is Gluten Free?

Oats do contain some gluten called Avenin, but it is a bit different to the gluten found in wheat.  Some people with Celiac Disease   a disease in which the small intestine is hypersensitive to gluten, leading to difficulty in digesting food.
can tolerate oats.  Most oats have been cross-contaminated with gluten at the farm where it is produced cited by many sites however   If you  have Celiac disease, you should talk to your doctor first before trying oats. It is very important to always remember to discuss any symptoms that you experience at any time with your Doctor or you can talk to you advocate to help you direct your care.
Oatmeal is a whole grain, and eating whole grains can lower your risk for several diseases, including high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Oatmeal also contains lignans, a plant chemical that has been found to prevent heart disease.

Eating oatmeal can lower your cholesterol, especially your LDL, or "bad" cholesterol. If you've been diagnosed with high cholesterol, consider adding oatmeal to your daily menu. If you have a family history of high cholesterol stay on top of it. Family history speaks volumes. I've known many skinny individuals that have been plagued with the ongoing battle of high  cholesterol. Use food as your medicine. Recheck your numbers every 3 months.  Always consult with your Doctor or if yu are not sure contact your Health Care Advocate

Oatmeal is a source of fiber. That means when you eat oats for breakfast, you're going to feel full for a long time. Breakfast foods high in sugar and fat can make you feel full for a brief period, but then you're hungry again. Sorry McDonald's your Sausage Egg Combo otherwise known as  Combo #2  is off my meal plan.  By the way, we all have guilty pleasures and it is better to recognize  what's your guilty pleasure so you can take action

I don't know about you but as a child, I had eczema so bad that my Mother used to make me wear Dickies along with all my shirts, LOL But oats also have outstanding benefits for your skin

If you thought there couldn’t possibly be any more benefits of oats, I’ve managed to find some!  Not only are oats great for the inside of your body but they are good for the outside too.  They are hypoallergenic so they are great for people with eczema for soothing the skin.

Simple Oatmeal Scrub

You can make a great exfoliating scrub with oats.  This is very natural, will save you a fortune in expensive facial scrubs, and it is very easy to do. Here is a very simple recipe:
Ingredients
  • Oatmeal
  • Warm water
Directions
  • Put a handful of oatmeal in a bowl and add enough warm water to make up a paste.
  • Apply it to your face avoiding the eye area and gently scrub.
  • Wash it off with warm water.
  • Your skin should feel softer and smoother

Oatmeal Bath Bomb

If you add oatmeal to your bath, it with soothe and soften your skin in a very gentle way and cost you pennies.
Ingredients
  • Small mesh drawstring bag
  • Oatmeal
Directions
  • Add the oatmeal to the mesh bag and close it.
  • Add the bag to the running bath water.
  • Have a lovely relaxing soak in the bath and emerge with very soft skin all over.
I hope you enjoyed learning more about oats.  If you have any other questions or comments about oats, I’d love to hear about them in the comments below. What is your favourite type of oats and how do you use them?

Lastly your not doing yourself any justice without the ultimate  Oatmeal Smoothie A breakfast smoothie, consisting of blended oats, fruit, and ice,  which can satisfy your hunger easily until lunch.
You know the smoothie drill by now but let me refresh your memory.
Step 1. Grab these Ingredients and lets Go!
  • Oats. I recommend old fashioned rolled oats over instant or quick oats--they're less processed and better for you. But, instant or quick oats will work, if that's what you have on hand. Steel-cut oats aren't recommended for these smoothies because they don't blend and soften well.
  • Yogurt  If you wish - Optional
  • Milk.  I don't  use milk  -Optional
  • Fruit juice. This is optional. You can use all milk for the smoothie liquid, or a combination of milk and juice. You'll see in my 6 recipes that I did it both ways. Fruit juices can vary a lot in their flavor, nutrition and sweetness.
  • Blender.
  •  Mason jars. You can use any 2 cup container, but mason jars are the perfect size for storing, serving, and grab-and-go convenience. They stack and store easily in the fridge and freezer. They can be found at Dollarama
So what's next? Always Remember to know your numbers  when you  get blood taken or when you take your blood pressure or blood sugar.   Keep moving, Exercise combined  with great eating is a definite recipe  for success.

Should We Be Giving Boys The HPV vaccine too? Learn about Ontario's HPV Immunization Program

Originally posted April 14 2015
Revised September 23, 2016

Hey, it's your Girl JA Nursing here. Hope all is well ?  just a reminder  that the aim of this Blog is to educate my listeners and readers on an urban platform the goal is to continue to increase the health and social literacy of my readers.

last year we  covered on ReggaeTown Radio.......

The Measles outbreak, Parents were worried about its spread and immunization routine for prevention. Measles started to crop up across Canada in February 2015. The first cases to appear were in Toronto and were followed by cases in the Niagara region, the Lanaudiere region of Quebec, and later, in Winnipeg. Below you will find the expected immunization routine. It is very important to have your child immunized within the required time period.

Again in the news  Yesterday 04/12/15 on G98.7's Grapevine  one of the topics discussed was regarding revoking social assistance to those who did not immunize their children. Do You Agree with that?

Sydney (dpa) - Australians who refuse to vaccinate their children will no longer receive child care subsidies and family tax benefits, Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced Sunday.

Wow, that is quite  drastic, but immunization is  a method that helps in reducing future costs  to any health care system.   Today on Global News topic of discussion again Immunization for  boys.

This blog will address vaccination and it's importance.

NEWS ALERT with headlines reading

Ontario expanding HPV vaccination program to include boys

Toronto has finally agreed to issue the HPV vaccine to boys This has been my thought for years especially since I have worked in Oncology for years (Cancer Floor) the effects of HPV are real. Especially since Boys can pass on HPV as well.  Have your say leave a comment below

My Story:  In 2006 my daughter Jessica was in  grade 7,  Her  class was the first group of students being introduced the new HPV vaccine. For the record, I did not make her take it because at that time I didn't  know enough about this new vaccine so to my ignorance I didn't research the situation enough. Now 9 years later do I agree with the vaccine. My answer is Yes.  With all the research that has now been provided to prove that the vaccine  does, in fact, help with the prevention of Cervical Cancer along with other health related problems. I felt it necessary to explain this topic in depth to you all.

Please note that it is cited that  The best time to vaccinate against HPV Providing the HPV vaccine in Grade 7 (when youth are normally 12, going on 13 years of age) aligns with expert recommendations from Canada's National Advisory Committee on Immunization because this is the age when the benefits of the vaccine are maximized.

A look back on my past thoughts!

Currently, the topic is should boys be given the vaccine as well? Well since there are several forms of  HPV otherwise known as   Human Papillomavirus , the intention to introduce the vaccine as early as grade 8 was to ensure its  introduction prior to children being sexually active. Great point. But in the  scenario, one would wonder what  would happen to my Son.   How is he protected? The suggestion which I agree with would mean that the government   would pay for boys to be vaccinated, which would help to decrease  the future costs of throat cancer related to HPV virus. So let's truly take this into consideration Alberta and Prince Edward Island also covers the costs for boys  and Nova Scotia plans to add HPV vaccines for boys in Grade 7 this fall. Should we rally for the same?

Did you know that while HPV is typically considered a factor in women’s cervical cancer, men are also at risk for penile, anal, head, neck and throat cancers?

The vaccine provides protection against four types of the common Human Papillomavirus, some of which are responsible for 70 percent of cervical cancer, according to Health Canada.

The virus also can cause other genital cancers and genital warts in both females and males.
Pharmacist Samy Mak told Humber News the vaccine is very important for young adults.

  •  HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection
  • HPV is so common that nearly all sexually-active men and women get it at some point in their lives.
  • There are many different types of HPV. Some types can cause health problems including genital warts and cancers. But there are vaccines that can stop these health problems from happening.

How is HPV spread?

You can get HPV by having
  • vaginal,
  • anal,
  • oral sex with someone who has the virus.
  • It is most commonly spread during vaginal or anal sex.
  • HPV can be passed even when an infected person has no signs or symptoms.
  • Anyone who is sexually active can get HPV, even if you have had sex with only one person. You also can develop symptoms years after you have sex with someone who is infected making it hard to know when you first became infected.
How can I avoid HPV and the health problems it can cause? You can do several things to lower your chances of getting HPV
  •   Get vaccinated. HPV vaccines are safe and effective. They can protect males and females against diseases (including cancers)

  • Get screened for cervical cancer. Routine screening for women aged 21 to 65 years old can prevent cervical cancer.

 Knowledge is Power
  • Use latex condoms the right way every time you have sex. This can lower your chances of getting HPV. But HPV can infect areas that are not covered by a condom - so condoms may not give full protection against getting HPV
  • Be in a mutually monogamous relationship – or have sex only with someone who only has sex with you.    Remember  Prevention  Is Better then Cure

Remember There is no treatment for the virus itself. However, there are treatments for the health problems that HPV can cause:
  1. Genital warts can be treated by you or your physician. If left untreated, genital warts may go away, stay the same, or grow in size or number.
  2. Cervical precancer can be treated. Women who get routine Pap tests and follow up as needed can identify problems before cancer develops. Prevention is always better than treatment. For more information visit
  3. Other HPV-related cancers are also more treatable when diagnosed and treated early.

Here is the vaccination schedule if you haven't followed this with your child please look into getting it done.

Vaccination is the most effective way to protect us from infectious diseases (PDF). Giving infants more than one vaccine at a time protects them when they are most vulnerable to infection and disease.

Be Poor If You Want To Knowledge Is the Key

Dr. Boyce Watkins Interview On How Dame Dash Was Wrong & Getting Your Money Right!

Hi, it's  your Girl JA Nursing here,  a couple months ago I  watched the famous interview by Damn Dash.  This video is a highlight of Damn Dash's video.  I celebrated  my 39th birthday on September 4, 2015, and it has left me thinking about my world, my surroundings and what  I can do to help complete my journey of awesomeness.   As I start my new year  I'll  ask myself am I being pimped by my life?  Weekly I will blog about financial literacy topics. Financial literacy has been something that I have struggled with throughout my life due to  lack of knowledge.

Below you will find some quotes from the video. I  encourage you to watch theses video.

I have always thought that socially we all have an obligation to change outcomes through our actions.

So I will ask you the question,  are you being pimped by your life? if you feel stuck in your life then you have to make  an adjustment.

According to Dr, Watkins he says Life is short.  So, this time should be spent doing things you love with people you love and giving yourself to something greater than yourself.  That’s how you can make it all worthwhile. -Dr. Boyce Watkins

Shift your life do you have options?  Do you  have FU money?  if you don't then you may have to make a change.

This is a community discussion..... "We need a nation of Builders"

We have to resurrect the pride of building and not borrowing

Corporations were not built for us

"You can't move into someone else s house and expect to shift around the Furniture"

"You can't judge the quality of a tree by the size of  the seed" every tree is going to start tiny"

The question is not to ask yourself about 2015 but to ask about 2115 what are we doing for our grandchildren and great-grandchildren

The $100 start up a book  a Must  read  according to

Through my journey of  life, I have realized that  Sometimes we get caught up in the fact  that a job is supposed to be given to us but we  are never educated on how to create our own titles as well. This Summer my Son Anthony spent the summer at Micro Skills a community organization in Etobicoke. He was guided by my good friend Andrae Walsh who ran an Entrepreneurship youth program. We have to get connected with organizations that will help you change outcomes for your children.  Thank You, Andrae

The economic philosophy of Black Nationalism only means that we have to become involved in a program of re-education to educate our people on the importance of knowing that when yous pend your dollar out of the community in which you live, the community in which you spend your money becomes richer and richer; the community out of which you take your money becomes poorer and poorer. And because these negroes, who have been misleading, misguided, are breaking their necks to take their money and spend it with The Man, The Man is becoming richer and richer, and you’re becoming poorer and poorer. And then what happens? The community in which you live becomes a slum. It becomes a ghetto. The conditions become run down. And then you have the audacity to – to complain about poor housing in a run-down community. Why you run it down yourself when you take your dollar out.

"And you and I are in a double-trap, because not only do we lose by taking our money someplace else and spending it, when we try and spend it in our own community we’re trapped because we haven’t had sense enough to set up stores and control the businesses of our community. The man who’s controlling the stores in our community is a man who doesn’t look like we do. He’s a man who doesn’t even live in the community. So you and I, even when we try and spend our money in the block where we live or the area where we live, we’re spending it with a man who, when the sun goes down, takes that basket full of money in another part of the town.https://www.facebook.com/notes/afrikan-centered-education/malcolm-x-on-the-keys-to-economic-empowerment-in-our-communities-and-what-traps-/449763491781579

Once you and I go into business and own and operate at least the businesses in our community, what we will be doing is developing a situation wherein, we will actually be able to create employment for the people in the community.- MalcolmX

Health Care Shield: A 23-Year Journey to Your Advocate on Paper

Hey, it's your girl, JANURSING  I've been thinking a lot lately about why I do what I do. And I realized it all comes back to 2002. ...
