We understand the importance of cultural competence as a tool for increasing the impact in both the health and social sector. Our Mission is to provide an approach that addresses prevention, risk, and coping skills with regards to Health and Social issues. JA Nursing We Care Inc. will work towards extending our organization Globally, within the Jamaican Diaspora.  Why is this needed in our community?  Over the years   it has been proven that individuals going through a health challenge can be related to what is know as   social determinants of health. What is that you ask? It has been cited that
Social determinants of health are economic and social conditions that influence the health of people and communities [1]. These conditions are shaped by the amount of money, power, and resources that people have, all of which are influenced by policy choices. Social determinants of health affect factors that are related to health outcomes. Factors related to health outcomes include:

  • How a person develops during the first few years of life (early childhood development)
  • How much education a person obtains
  • Being able to get and keep a job
  • What kind of work a person does
  • Having food or being able to get food (food security)
  • Having access to health services and the quality of those services
  • Housing status
  • How much money a person earns
  • Discrimination and social support

With  these factors in mind,  increasing  the  health and social  literacy of  my community   became the mission of both my divisions both locally and internationally.

Are You thinking of seeing a Naturopath or a Homeopath?

So you are thinking of seeing a naturopath or a homeopath?

Did you know ? A homeopathic practitioner is trained only in homeopathy, while a naturopathic doctor has the training, education and expertise to design an overall treatment program that draws on a number of therapies, including homeopathic remedies. Knowing the difference is the start.
Let JA Nursing assist with those  choices.

To become a naturopath in Ontario:
let's just learn who you may be consulting about your health. After all not all Doctors are made equal. FYI

To be considered for admission to the ND program, applicants must have completed a three- or four-year bachelor's degree in any discipline at an accredited institution. Then you can apply   to be a  Naturopathic Doctor (ND) 4-year program.

Of course after this you are ready to run your business as a Naturopathic Doctor (ND).  Let's make it clear Naturopathic
medicine is a business, I am not  discrediting the sincere desire of ND's to help individuals teach optimal functioning but this as well comes with a price.

Before I refer you to use a Naturopathic Doctor we will review your current medical status and as well, we will need to confirm a naturopathic doctor’s true qualifications.

Naturopathic doctors must be registered to practice in Ontario and to be accepted as a member of OAND.  I will verify that a naturopathic doctor is registered. Just another advantage of using a Healthcare Advocate.

What are my views on alternative medicine?

I believe that naturopathy is definitely a wave of  wellness that has been seen as a option; but naturopaths are not bound by science. They believe in healing through nature etc etc and  it draws  individuals in that are not able to find their way through our healthcare system.

Unfortunately without true understanding of your disease you may fall prey to spending money without results?

There are typically three types of patients that seek naturalistic care:

1)Patients that are looking for disease prevention and health promotion strategies.

2)Patients that have a range of symptoms that they have been unable to address on their own or with the help of other medical practitioners.

3)Patients that have been diagnosed with an illness and are looking for alternative treatments.

While you may choose to see a naturopath as your family doctor, their primary focus is on a natural approach to health care. Acupuncture, homeopathy, massage, hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition and lifestyle counseling are among the typical treatments that you could expect to receive from a naturopath, depending on your needs.

Looking into the fees from a Toronto based naturopath this is what I came up with
Initial Visit (60-90 min)
$185
Second Visit (45-60 min)
$125
Follow-up Visit (30 min)
$90
Follow-up Visit (30 min acupuncture)
$70
They charge what they want  and you still need to consult with your Doctor.

let's be clear about this, a Naturopath will require

Comprehensive Laboratory Testing
Laboratory testing, including urine analysis, blood work and saliva testing, is an essential aspect of a complete medical assessment. Naturopathic Doctors will use standard laboratory testing to provide them with further information for a complete assessment.

They will also need your
Previous Medical Reports and Diagnostic Testing
All medical reports, such as MRIs, X-rays or scans are valuable assets that a naturopathic doctor will use during their  assessment , that's if you provide the right information. Naturopathic Doctors will refer to another medical health professional when appropriate to ensure that all patients receive the best quality health care possible and that all required information is available in order to fully understand the root causes of a patient's health concerns.

So let me clarify this all for you, my goal as a healthcare advocate is to guide your care in the same way, however I am able to assist you through the healthcare system in your treatment,  as well as help you to make  informed decisions on what should be next.  Given the  fact that there are limitations for Naturopaths
For example, naturopaths do not have access to diagnostic imaging, such as MRIs. If you're dealing with a broken bone or need surgery, you will still need to consult a conventional doctor. In cases where a patient is in need of conventional medical treatment, a naturopath will refer.  However by using a healthcare advocate it will give you and your family a true comprehensive way of understanding what resources  should be used.

My goal is to help you choose and understand what's right for you because you understand your disease fully.
Trying alternatives due to lack of knowledge will not be the answer to ultimate health.

Services by a   Healthcare advocate today:
My services include full assessments of your current and past history including family health. Ability to use my nursing knowledge to understand your issues current, or potential.  I strive on the knowledge gained through  my 14 working years in our healthcare system to guide you through all channels of care needed. Medical, fitness, nutrition And the ultimate goal of overall Health literacy.

My fees are affordable and will give you the true understanding and health teaching  that you require. This is the mission of JA Smith Consulting and Nursing Services.

"We're not opposing each other," stresses Oulahen. "It's not one or the other. My view is that it would be best to use both [approaches]."Quote from a naturopath
