My Interview On True2Soul Radio With Keda Edwards Pierre - Executive Producer

Hey, it's your girl JA Nursing here,  It has been an incredible journey.  Several months ago I received a call from Keda Edwards Pierre, Executive Producer, Creative Director, and Host of True2Soul Radio Network.  She explained that her show has Real Talk, Real People, Personal Journeys, and Professional Advice. #True2Soul is about Powerful Living and how we make it happen!

Keda,  introduced herself as a woman destined to create change. I thought to myself great minds think alike. I asked very little about her because I felt her passion in the same manner that she felt my passion. She said that she wanted to invite me to be a guest on her talk show. Which of course I said yes.  Through my research, her page read  Welcome to the “Being Keda” Show!  Pull up a chair and join Keda Edwards Pierre – as she discusses life as a mother, police officer, holistic health consultant, and transition coach. Tune in to hear guest experts offer tips, juicy discussion, valuable information, and interesting stories – it’s all here!  I am pleased to introduce you her network

True2Soul Radio Network – The Being Keda Show  After a couple conversations I learned that this incredible woman was very passionate, not to mention, that personally I have never had many conversations with the Police much less a female black  Officer. This information I learned after the interview.  I remember jokingly saying "Girl If I had known you where PO PO maybe I would not have done the interview" LOL. But through her authentic self she is much more than her profession. In the same manner, that when I tell people that I am a Nurse; I often hear stories about the failures that people have encountered in our healthcare system.  The reason why I felt inclined to post this is because I truly believe that our community has many great people that represent their authentic self, not a profession. They always say one bad apple spoils it for the bunch.

Keda believes in this simple formula as do I

Powerful Success = True2Soul®

(Energy + Action). The level of your success and power is directly proportional to
1) The ENERGY you invest;

2) The TYPE OF ACTION you choose;

3) Multiplied by how much of your SELF you bring to the table!

In short, the key to your power and success …the most influential part of the formula – is YOU.

As your advocate, it is also important to introduce individuals to our community that embrace  what I believe in and  who are precise in understanding the key to wellness.  Keda Edwards Pierre is a Vitality Expert, Intuitive Coach, Usui/Tibetan Reiki Master/Teacher, and Spiritual Healer.  Keda has lived the tenets of holistic health over the last two decades.  During this time she began to discern what holistic practices best suited her needs and the needs of those she cared about.  Her vibrant passion for holistic health was stoked by a lack of access to holistic health services amongst friends, family, and community.  She believes strongly that knowledge and services which support life balance and long-term health strategies should be available and attainable - regardless of age, gender, location, status, etc. Each healing service or product at Verani is referred to as a Key to Well Being. The Verani Keys cater to you as a Whole Being that is fully capable of returning to vibrant health.  We simply act as facilitators and companions on your journey.  We are professionally trained and well-experienced to be able to provide to you tools, techniques, and long-term strategies as you strive for balance and health.  Visit  Keys to Well Being Page to learn more.  I am pleased to  have met  this incredible woman but also to be a part of what her team stands for.

Thank you Keda, for having me on your Show,  This is a much-needed platform  I love the  message on your voicemail that states Remember to be True 2 You!

KICK YOUR BLUES TO THE CURB WITH THESE 5 STEPS YOUR MENTAL WELLNESS MATTERS

Winter may be almost over  but these house rules for your mind and body should be all year round. Rules should include routine visits with your physician, consulting with a health advocate, eating right and staying active especially as the season changes. Did you know that between 60% and 90% of people with SAD are women? It’s true. If you are a female between fifteen and fifty five, you are more likely to develop S.A.D.
It’s been noted that during the winter months we all tend to get comfortable, let’s remember that those yummy comfort foods help to add those extra winter pounds.  It also  has been noted that during the winter  higher incidences of S.A.D and depression have been found but before you start self diagnosing   your self let's go over S.A.D
What is S.A.D – Seasonal Affective Disorder? Many people experience seasonal changes in feelings of well-being and in energy, sleep patterns and eating patterns, to a greater or lesser degree generally called the “Winter Blues”.  But some people experience powerful changes to the degree that it becomes a form of clinical depression, called Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D).
It has been cited that about 2% to 6% of Canadians will experience S.A.D. in their lifetime. Another 15% will experience a milder form of S.A.D.
Who is at risk of developing Seasonal Affective Disorder? Women are up to eight times as likely as men to report having S.A.D.
People in northern countries are more likely to experience S.A.D. than those who live closer to the equator because the days get shorter the further north you go.
S.A.D. tends to run in families – most individuals with S.A.D. have at least one close relative with a history of depression.
What are the risk factors/triggers for Seasonal Affective Disorder? A variety of psychological, social and biological factors may contribute to S.A.D. Some known factors are:
  • Inherent vulnerability
  • Light deprivation
  • Stress
  • Biological factors unique to the individual, as well as hormonal changes due to physical conditions
  • Early childhood trauma

What are the symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder?
  • Oversleeping – sometimes an increase of two to four or more hours per day
  • Lethargy (low energy)
  • Intense craving for carbohydrates
  • Weight gain
  • Withdrawal from social contacts
  • Depressed mood occurring over at least two consecutive winters, alternating with non-depressed periods in the spring and summer
What do I need to tell my doctor?
  • Write down any symptoms you’ve had
  • Write down key personal information
  • Make a list of all medications you are taking
  • Write down questions to ask your doctor
  • Take a family member or friend along
Discuss all of your symptoms with your doctor and describe how they are affecting your life (e.g. sleeping several extra hours per day and missing work/school/appointments). Your doctor can suggest or provide appropriate therapy. Make sure to discuss all of the available treatments and medications and their benefits and side effects before making any decisions.
Other treatment options such as massage therapy, music therapy, meditation, shiatsu, therapeutic touch, aromatherapy or tai chi, Pilates and yoga can also help to improve wellness.

Your Mental Wellness Check list for kicking the Winter blues

  • Stick to your treatment plan. Don’t skip psychotherapy sessions. Even if you’re
  • feeling well, continue to take medication as prescribed.
  • Learn about S.A.D. Empower yourself by learning about your condition.
  • Pay attention to the warning signs. Find out what triggers your S.A.D. Make a plan so that you know what to do if your symptoms get worse. Contact your doctor, therapist or health advocate if you notice any changes. Ask friends or family to watch out for warning signs.
  • Get exercise. Physical activity may help reduce the symptoms of S.A.D. Consider walking, jogging, swimming, gardening, or any other physical activity.
  • Avoid alcohol and illicit drugs. It may seem like they lessen your problems, but in the long run, they generally worsen symptoms and make S.A.D. harder to treat.
  • Get adequate sleep. This is especially important. If you’re having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor about what you can do.

Maintain an adequate diet. The Canada Food Guide is a useful reference in helping you choose to eat well. Choose more protein and Omega 3. Eat fewer simple carbohydrates, substituting more complex carbohydrates, such as whole grains.

15 WAYS TO IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH THIS IS A MAJOR KEY ALERT

IMPROVE YOUR HEALTH  TODAY WITH THIS  CHALLENGE

Hey, it's your girl JA Nursing here,  I remember back in the days,  I used to think that 40 was the year that represented old age but, forgive me for being conceited  but that is no longer the truth. I have plenty of  friends that will be turning 40 in 2016 . It truly seems like I am a part of the new elite 40 club.  Change is good especially if it becomes continuous   Forget the excuses.  Just for today, focus on the many ways that you can improve your health.  I  have been blogging for quite some time now and  I thank each and every one of you for taking the time to read  my blogs and my articles in the TorontoCaribbeanNewspaper .     I have managed to do all of these steps in an attempt to keep myself rejuvenated.  My ask the expert platform gives you an opportunity to ask a health question that I will answer.  Doing things gradually is a sure fire way to keep the habit going.  I follow Dj Khaled because his motivation to be at his best is enough to get the largest person motivated to get healthy. Remember healthy doesn't necessarily mean weight loss, It is a combination of things, So  grab a pen as I go into  this Major Cloth Talk (DjKhaled Voice)
This list is by no means complete, but  it is a starting point to making your physical, emotional, and spiritual health a priority in your busy life.   Once you do these health upgrades today, do them again tomorrow.  Before you know it you’ll be living a healthy lifestyle…with  no effort.
1. Drink more water. Your body is 90 percent water and needs water for almost every function.  Many of the aches and pains, headaches, and other symptoms we experience would lessen if we just drank more water.
2. Go for a brisk walk.  Your heart is a muscle that needs movement inorder to function optimally. We know this but we often need a reminder to just do it. Your body was made to move.
3. Laugh daily laughter therapy is my medicine along with  music therapy  which releases Endorphins which are produced in your brain  which is designed to relieve stress and enhance pleasure.
4. Eat 2 or 3 pieces or servings of fruit (count ½ cup of fruit like grapes, blueberries, cherries, etc. as a serving). If you can't eat it remember you can blend it put add some greens to your smoothie  Follow the 60/40 rule: 3 cups fruit and 2 cups leafy greens. If you plan to replace a meal with a green smoothie you will need to use  healthy fats and proteins.  such as
Healthy fats protect your heart, keep your energy levels up, boost metabolism, and lower bad cholesterol levels. So please don’t skip the fats. They’re actually really, really good for you! And these ingredients below make your green smoothies extra creamy.
  • Avocado
  • Coconut oil
  • Almond butter
  • Chia seeds (yep, here they are again! These babies are loaded with healthy fats and protein, making them a great everyday booster)
Plant-based proteins keep your body full and give you tons of energy. They also help repair your muscles, which is perfect for that post-workout buzz. Oh, kale to the yeah!
  • Hemp hearts
  • Chia seeds
  • Plant-based protein powder
  • Rolled oats
  • Tofu
5. Eat a large salad. I’m frequently told by someone who is making excuses for his/her bad diet that eating healthy is expensive. Nonsense. Some of the best superfoods are cheap and readily available in the form of salad greens. They are packed with vitamins, minerals, chlorophyll (gives plants their green color and boosts our blood health), enzymes (that improve digestion and increase energy), and many phytonutrients.
6. Meditate. Just taking some time out to clear your thoughts and unplugging from technology and people can help you feel more balanced and peaceful.
7. Deep breathe for at least 5 minutes, as often as you can. Research shows that deep breathing, even for minutes, can reduce stress hormone levels. That translates into less anxiety, better sleep, and less likelihood to pack on the pounds. I always tell my Patients that the easiest way to remember to breath is to breath in like your smelling the roses and blow out slowly like your blowing out your birthday candles
8. Snack between meals on healthy snacks like almonds, veggies, hummus and whole grain pitas. Not only will you stabilize your moods, you’ll balance your weight thanks to regulated blood sugar levels. This is very important for Diabetics as well
9. Drink a freshly made juice—preferably with green veggies. Green juices are Mother Nature’s healing nectar. They are powerhouses of nutrients that help your body heal and energize you all at once.
10. Stop and smell the flowers,  Take notes from DJ Khaled ,  Take notes from DJ Khaled literally. Not only will slowing down make you feel great, you will be exposed to natural aromatherapy with relaxing, energizing, or therapeutic effects. The fact that you can smell the flowers means molecules of their essential oils are coming into contact with your sensory systems—one of the fastest ways to balance hormones.
11. Write down at least 10 things for which you are grateful.  Increasing amounts of research show that gratitude builds better health and happiness.
12. Eliminate at least one item from your life that contains toxic chemicals For essential items, choose a natural option instead. I have been using vinegar  even to clean off the stove. I was surprised!
13. Do something nice for someone or just smile at s stranger, them smiling back will feel nice.
14. Dry skin brush. Dry skin brushing in small circles with a natural bristled brush, working from your extremities toward your heart boosts your blood circulation and the movement of lymph through your body to help eliminate toxic waste buildup in your tissues while boosting your energy.
15. Soak in a warm bath with Epsom salts. The magnesium in Epsom salts absorbs through your skin and helps relax your muscles and reduce pain levels while contributing to your heart health.
What will you do today to upgrade your health? This has been watching out for your health with your Health And Social Advocate Michelle Smith  stay connected!   please share thanks in advance

JOIN THE ME-TIME CHALLENGE SAY GOODBYE TO STRESS

Hello,  it's your Girl JA Nursing here, Shake what your mama gave you it's a new day. Especially with all the disturbing news over the past couple of days,  I wanted to  check in with you.  I just came back from vacation but I came back to a lot of new changes in my life and a shortfall in my passion. So I thought to get back at it again with this blog.  Forgive me for my selfishness, but me time has to be started asap. I find that I spend so much time on others that I literally forget  about myself, even my vacation was focused on others and then I got sick while in Jamaica.  I don't know about you but by  Wednesday  my body screams  for me time. It's time to rediscover  alone time without feeling guilty; not only does alone time help you get in touch with your mental wellness but it is a true way of rebuilding on your thoughts.

Without me time, you are setting yourself up for a prescription called stress. We all know that stress  can  take a toll on your  mind, body, and soul; to further highlight this fact, here are some rules to me time that if not followed you may experience these physical and mental signs, that  will let you know that it's  time for   ME TIME.

Me time=  time spent relaxing on one's own as opposed to working or doing things for others, seen as an opportunity to reduce stress or restore energy.

Here are some #metime rules to follow: I know it may seem  hard especially with the kids being home from school.  but start with even 15 minutes a day, inform your children that "Mommy is going to take me time now. Just like any other relationship, it is important to set boundaries. Your children need to know that even though Mommy looks like "SuperWomen" she is not.
I used to tell my kids with that stern Jamaican accent "It's My time Now"  and eventually they understood that it was better for Mommy to take a break then be flustered all day long. Remember children develop intuition very early, Both of my children always knew when something was wrong and would just come to me, and look  into my eyes.  So don't feel bad about explaining to your children that Mommy needs time alone.  You may think that this may be interpreted as rejection,  But the truth of the matter is, that we need to establish communicating about our feelings with our children sooner rather than later. This also aids in helping children to  grow up  with the understanding that everyone has feelings. It really is the start to good relationship building and communication with your child.   If you have more than one child eventually,  your older child will start  advocating for  you  by saying "leave Mommy alone she's taking me time now. LOL

Finding time for yourself is an essential  for creating healthy habits. By Taking charge of your health and happiness, you will lower your stress, become more productive, and have more energy.

Do things that feed you mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. You’ll become a better parent, spouse, and a more effective team player at work. Remember Don't use your me time to start folding laundry, cleaning up the house or picking up the toys left on the floor. It may seem uncomfortable like your missing out on something that needs to be done, It may even seem more stressful at first to leave things undone, but you'll have more energy if you take a little time off. Giving yourself permission to slow down and relax for a few moments a day, or a few hours each week, will help you gain a fresh outlook and a renewed sense of perspective. So try  these 10 Ideas for Mom’s Daily “Me” Time.

1. Go to the movies/ Catch up on a favorite show
2. Write something. Poetry, a letter, a short story, a journal, or blog entry.-- writing blogs calms me down
3. Dance  I do this every day at 1200 if I'm off work to my favorite station g98.7fm
4. Take a bubble bath with soft music, candles, and a glass of ice-cold sparkling cider in your best crystal flute.
5. Take a walk  Now my favorite thing to do
6. Window shop
7. Treat yourself to lunch. My favorite to do
8. Take a nap. A real nap…flopping down on the couch doesn’t count! Get in bed, under the covers.

10. Catch up on your reading
Your body is your temple and if you are  are experiencing these signs your body is screaming for #metime  or a visit to the Dr's never ignore  the signs or  symptoms that your body is telling you
