MEDICAL MARIJUANA Get The Facts

Hi It's your Girl JA Nursing here,  Hope all is well?   In past weeks, I have had several questions about  Medical Marijuana.  I have always been an advocate for Medical Marijuana not because I smoke it  but, because I have been able to see the  benefits it has had for many.   Do I smoke  weed, The answer is NO but if  I had a condition that I could substitute narcotics for medical marijuana  then I guess I would be a User.  I  have also  discussed this topic  on  CHRY 105.5fm The Wizology show because I know that for most people getting access to medical Marijuana can be difficult. The new or updated policies reflect concerns that have been expressed by some in the medical community including the absence of scientific evidence on the benefits of medical marijuana, and the challenging role being given to physicians and other healthcare providers when a patient requests access to medical marijuana. As your health care  Advocate,  I am  here  to assist you get the right care and to make the right choices.

In recent weeks medical Marijuana has been trending as a big discussion  especially with most recent talks by   Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says it "makes a lot of sense" to use the LCBO to sell marijuana after the federal government legalizes sale of the drug.
I can't say that I agree with that choice but of course like anything else we will have to see how this plays out.
Especially with the new Liberal Party website that say's
We will legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana.
Canada’s current system of marijuana prohibition does not work. It does not prevent young people from using marijuana and too many Canadians end up with criminal records for possessing small amounts of the drug.
Arresting and prosecuting these offenses is expensive for our criminal justice system. It traps too many Canadians in the criminal justice system for minor, non-violent offenses. At the same time, the proceeds from the illegal drug trade support organized crime and greater threats to public safety, like human trafficking and hard drugs.
To ensure that we keep marijuana out of the hands of children, and the profits out of the hands of criminals, we will legalize, regulate, and restrict access to marijuana.
We will remove marijuana consumption and incidental possession from the Criminal Code, and create new, stronger laws to punish more severely those who provide it to minors, those who operate a motor vehicle while under its influence, and those who sell it outside of the new regulatory framework.

At this point, marijuana is legal for medical use in Canada.  To legalize or not to legalize that has been the question. The marijuana plant contains chemicals that may help treat a range of illnesses or symptoms. The 2 main  chemicals  in Marijuana , Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) and for medical purposes different percentages of both TCH and CBD will be used. As opposed to street Weed (marijuana) their is no control over what chemicals are used in the marijuana composition, which  for years has  raised concerns.  The debate,  on marijuana is that unlike the Weed (Sess)  grown in  Caribbean countries which for years have been ruled the healer of all ailments this new Marijuana or Hydro Marijuana may have chemicals that can cause undesirable effects for many.  legalizing marijuana vs medial marijuana will always be a debate. Be aware that all cannabinoids (THC, CBD, and beyond) have a medical benefit, and it’s important to research which strains contain which levels of cannabinoids, and what cannabinoids are best suited for the particular conditions you are trying to treat.
There has always been the myth regarding Marijuana and mental illness, however what many don't understand is that the use  of any street  drugs can cause a increased occurrence of Mental Illness, for that reason  it’s pretty good advice that if you have risk factors for mental illness, you should be careful about using recreational drugs.

For those of you who have been curious here goes
The law about medical marijuana isn't always so easy and straightforward. We rely on the regulations set by the Government of Canada to guide us. The best and most accurate information can be found in Health Canada's Law Enforcement Issues.
If you are a Canadian citizen, you can legally obtain your medication by registering your medical document with a Licensed Producer that is authorized by Health Canada's Medical for Marijuana Purposes Regulations (MMPR). Thousands of Canadians are Federally licensed to possess and use medical marijuana. Medical marijuana is a proven safe, virtually side effect-free alternative to all pharmaceuticals. The only way to legally protect yourself is through Health Canada’s Marijuana for  Medical Purpose Regulations (MMPR) which came into effect on March 31, 2014.(MMPR). For the steps required to transition to the new MMPR visit http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/dhp-mps/marihuana/access-acceder-eng.php. . The MMPR treats marijuana as much as possible like any other narcotic used for medical purposes by creating conditions for a new, commercial industry that is responsible for its production and distribution. According to Health Canada, the regulations "will provide access to quality-controlled marijuana for medical purposes, produced under secure and sanitary conditions, to those Canadians who need it, while strengthening the safety of Canadian communities. In addition, the new regulations will also enable more choices of marijuana strains and licensed, commercial suppliers."

One of the common myths about medical marijuana is  that it has to  be smoked, however vaporization has become recognized as the safest and most effective medical cannabis delivery method currently available. Vaporization is different from smoking as it is achieved by heating the cannabis to a temperature that vaporizes, but does not burn the cannabinoids, virtually eliminating the health risks associated with smoking.   Cannabis indica, cannabis sativa, cannabis americanus, Indian hemp and marijuana (or marihuana) all refer to the same plant.
Cannabis is used throughout the world for diverse purposes and has a long history including  many therapeutic properties that has been known to help many.

Medical marijuana users claim the drug helps relieve pain and suppress nausea — the two main reasons it's often used to relieve the side effects of chemotherapy

According to Health Canada, evidence suggests that medical marijuana may be useful in some of the following therapeutic situations:
  • Palliative Care
  • Cancer
  • Chronic Pain
  • Nausea and Vomiting
  • Wasting Syndrome
  • Loss of Appetite
  • Anorexia Nervosa
  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)
  • Multiple Sclerosis
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  •  ALS
  • Epilepsy
  • Fibromyalgia,
  • Arthritis (RA or OA)
  • Glaucoma
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety and
  • Depression
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • HIV/AIDS

There is no specific medical requirement for patients to possess marijuana for medical purposes but new guidelines for doctors advises that the patients be over 25 years old. However, in view of the fact that use of marijuana for other than medical purposes is prohibited under Canadian Federal law, all patients who wish to be legal medical users must be able to present documented evidence of a medical condition which warrants use of marijuana.  Under the regulations, the patient must consult with a prescribed healthcare practitioner (i.e., a physician or a qualified nurse practitioner) and obtain a signed "medical document," which is similar to a prescription. The patient can then get the marijuana by submitting the medical document directly to a licensed commercial producer.

What is cancer?

Cancer is a disease that starts in our cells. Our bodies are made up of millions of cells, grouped together to form tissues and organs such as muscles and bones, the lungs and the liver. Genes inside each cell order it to grow, work, reproduce and die. Normally, our cells obey these orders and we remain healthy. But sometimes the instructions get mixed up, causing the cells to form lumps or tumours, or spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body.
Tumours can be either benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Benign tumour cells stay in one place in the body and are not usually life-threatening.
Malignant tumour cells are able to invade nearby tissues and spread to other parts of the body. Cancer cells that spread to other parts of the body are called metastases.
The first sign that a malignant tumour has spread (metastasized) is often swelling of nearby lymph nodes, but cancer can metastasize to almost any part of the body. It is important to find malignant tumours as early as possible.
Cancers are named after the part of the body where they start. For example, cancer that starts in the bladder but spreads to the lung is called bladder cancer with lung metastases.

How to reduce cancer risk

There are many known risk factors for cancer. It has been estimated that smoking is responsible for 30% of all cancer deaths and that one-third of cancers can be linked to diet, obesity and lack of exercise.
Risk reduction is taking action to lower one's risk of developing cancer. Risk can be increased or decreased by lifestyle choices and the kind of environment a person lives and works in. About half of all cancers can be prevented through healthy living and policies that protect the public.

Reducing your risk

To help reduce your risk of developing cancer, follow these general steps:
Live well. Make healthy choices.
Be aware. Look after yourself.
  • Know your body and watch for signs of cancer.
  • Report any changes in your health to your doctor.
  • Get screened and help find cancer early.
  • Check your family’s cancer history.
  • Understand how hormones and infections affect your cancer risk.
  • Get rid of harmful substances at work and at home.

Have You Heard That Eating Kale Is Bad For You? Find Out More

Hi it's your Girl JA Nursing here, last week through my daily internet stroll  I found

Sorry, Foodies: We're About to Ruin Kale. This Mother Jones Story has managed to create  47,000 shares on Face book  with it's cautionary title. In fact both theses titles have definitely called for my attention.

The role of JA Nursing  as your Health Care advocate will always be to continue to increase your Health Literacy when it pertains to information and news on health. With all the medical jargon who best to help you set your mind at ease.

Many of my  blogs that have given praises to kale for me to see this topic on the radar I had to weight in. In health care we always have to learn to evaluate sources and understand benefits vs true negatives.

Why have I started to include Kale as a staple food source in my grocery cart? Coming from a West Indian family with Spinach and calla-loo being a weekly dish on the table, Back then I did not know that my palat my to adore what we know has the title of the best super food to hit the grocery store.

Lets set the record straight Thallium  In an article for Craftsmanship magazine, molecular biologist Dr. Ernie Hubbard thinks not. According to him, there may be a link between kale and thallium poisoning, along with other toxic metals, as a result of using coal ash spread for fertilizer. Hubbard arrived at this conclusion after identifying toxic heavy metal in patients' urine. Initially, he thought these higher toxin levels were a byproduct of people eating more kale and other green vegetables. The U.S. Department of Agriculture found kale consumption alone has considerably grown since 2007, when 954 farms harvesting kale grew to 2,500 harvesters in 2012. But when Hubbard reviewed studies as far back as 2001, he found everyone's favorite green was particularly good at taking thallium up from soil.

Hubbard's suspicions took hold when a urine sample from one of his clients Laura Fenamore, a 52-year-old vegetarian who works out two hours per day, exhibited  thallium

Now what does this mean for me and You well let it be known that Thallium is found in the earth the grows kale. It has not been  completed c\verified that kale will cause poisoned, but like many other foods I would of course continue to say eating kale vs a big plate of oxtail and rice and peas or a creamy plate of  Fettuccine Alfredo would be a better choice.

The long and short of this story is that Eat Your Greens: Science Has Not Confirmed The Link Between Thallium Poisoning And Kale writes the medical daily.

I will continue to add kale to my plate and my daily smoothies because it's  benefits out way the negatives.
Lets quickly  review   8 Health Benefits of Kale:

1. Can help lower cholesterol levels.
The fiber fiber in kale binds bile acids and helps lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart disease. It’s best when kale is cooked instead of raw.

2. Kale is a detox food.
It’s filled with fiber and sulfur which are great for detoxifying your body and keeping your liver healthy.

3. Low in calories
A cup of chopped kale has only 33 calories. Great for weight loss!

4. Great at fighting many cancers
Kale is rich in organosulfur compounds which are known to fight cancer, especially colon cancer.

5. Supports a healthy immune system.
Kale is full of sulforaphane which helps which nourishes the immune system.

6. Visual Benefits.
Kale is abundant in two carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin, which act like sunglass filters preventing damage to the eyes from excessive exposure to ultraviolet light.

7. Supports normal blood clotting, antioxidant activity, and bone health.
The high amount of Vitamin K helps nourishes those activities in the body healthy.

8. Great for helping digestion and elimination.
It is very high in fiber.

All greens are nutritious, but kale stands way above the rest. Kale has more iron than beef per calorie. Very high in in Vitamin K, full of powerful antioxidants and much more. Read all about it: Kale Nutrition.

Don't be to quick to cut out kale due to thallium risk,  if your going to cut that tastey Jerk pork and  fried Chicken.
Great fact to consider do you which soil your Kale was grown in? Because there's no real way to know if your kale was grown in soil with thallium—and how that translates into its concentration in your blood—it's pretty much impossible to set a defined limit of how much of the veggie you should be consuming. But as always, moderation is a good rule of thumb.
In conclusion,  Hubbard may have made a genuine link, but nothing is concrete yet. When it comes to science, replication is key, and Hubbard seems to be the first to make such a link.

How to Buy and Store Kale:
  • Always buy organic kale; it is grown with lots of chemicals making it one of the Dirty Dozen. The kale should be firm with fresh, with deeply colored leaves and hardy stems.
  • Kale with smaller leaves will be tenderer and have a milder flavor than larger leaves.
  • Put kale in a plastic storage bag removing as much of the air from the bag as possible. Keep in the refrigerator for 5 to 7 days. The longer it is stored, the more bitter its flavor becomes. Do not wash kale before storing because the water encourages spoilage.

Cautions:

Too much vitamin K can cause problems for anyone taking anticoagulants/Blood thinners such as warfarin because the high level of vitamin K may interfere with the drugs. Consult your doctor before adding kale to your diet if you are on this type of medication.

Kale and Oxalates. Kale contains oxalates that interfere with the absorption of calcium.  There is much controversy about this.

Goitrogenic Food? Contrary to popular belief, latest studies show that kale is not goitrogenic. In fact, most foods that are commonly called goitrogenic (kale, broccoli and cauliflower) as well as soy-based foods do not interfere with thyroid function in healthy persons even when they are consumed on a daily basis. Again this is controversial.

I will continue to find the correct answers for my team smarties, the goal will always be to reveal the truth about various health issues and contents located from other sources.
