5 Factors that can be Affecting your Child's Self Esteem

Hi it's your Girl JA Nursing here,  As a   Mother I often have to check my self confidence meter. I realize that my confidence has a impact on my Children.
The reason for this blog is to really examine ways in which we can all work towards increasing our self esteem with positive affirmations, taking a look at how we as parents play a big role in nurturing this for our children. With back to school underway.  I often wonder what issues effect boys. So I asked my Son Anthony  who is 16,  how he felt about his confidence? His response was funny. He said, "Mom I don't have  self esteem issues, I have friends, I get good grades and nothing bothers me." I felt great to hear this  answer, but since I am not a man, it can be difficult at times identifying ways in which I can work on increasing  my Son's  self esteem and self confidence.

Self esteem, Self confidence are big issues for many. I remember going back to school every year with the fear of being teased about my complexion being so dark.
The stress of it all!  I have always wondered if my West Indian parenting has had a impact on my daughter's confidence,   I would have to say  my daughter  is 21 and she is  a force to be reckoned  with.  My daughter Jessica is so much more confident then I was growing up.

For sure the term "Single Mother" has always left me feeling self conscious about my status. But the question is why? Well society has put such a negative connotations  on being a single parent, that I have always  felt that as I get older  I would rather make a more positive title which  would be a better introduction to the great journey of being a Parent.

So her goes my name is Michelle Smith and I am a  Independently parenting Mother of 2. This sounds more positive.  Yes, it is a bit of a tongue twister but none the less, I'm gong to work with this title.

from now on I would ask that Mothers correct people who announce them as Single Mothers.  For years I have been correcting people because  I am a Mother in every way  Married or Not. I utilize the resources in from of me to help me make the best choices as a parent. Always remember it takes a true village to raise  children.

Growing up especially in a West Indian house hold my opinion was rarely  asked if any.  Today's society has placed a lot of emphasis on including  our children in decisions.
Do you agree or disagree with this one?
One article sited that  -Adolescents love nothing better than to be treated like grownups, and they’re usually flattered anytime that you invite them into the adult world. Hmm this could be a valid point try and lets see how that works.

How to Become More Confident?

Why should you believe in yourself?

Because you are unique, you see things differently from anyone else, you are therefore special and original and can do things that others can’t. You have something to contribute and you can help others because of your life experience, think back to your successes and you will see that if you believe you can achieve. The only limits you have in this world really are those in your mind.  Theses words are easier to comprehend as adults, but it is very valid word that have to be taught  to our children, especially in a society that can place negative affirmations on our children.

Positive affirmations do work. An affirmation can help you replace negative thoughts with a more helpful positive one. As back to school starts up its very important  for  Us as parents to instill  the skills of positive affirmation.

Be Generous With Praise

“We don’t tell our children often enough what they did right, observes Dr. Adele Hofmann. Commend your child not only for accomplishments but for effort—including those times when it fails to bring the desired results. In addition, let’s encourage kids to feel proud of themselves. Pride should shine from within, not just in response to external approval.

5 Factors affecting children’s self esteem:
  • How much the child feels wanted, appreciated and loved
  • How your child sees himself, often built from what parents and those close say
  • His or her sense of achievement
  • How the child relates to others
Your child’s self esteem can be increased by you 9 TIPS:
  • Appreciating your child
  • Telling your child that you love them
  • Spending time with your child
  • Encouraging your child to make choices
  • Fostering independence in your children
  • Giving genuine importance to your child’s opinion and listening
  • Taking the time to explain reasons
  • Feeding your child with positive encouragement
  • Encouraging your child to try new and challenging activities
Appreciating your child
A child’s self esteem will suffer if he or she is not appreciated. Children know if you are sincere or not. If you spend time together you must enjoy or there is no point. Show appreciation at all times. Tell your child you love him or her – this is appreciation. Thanking a child when he does something good is reward enough. Children like to please.  This point has been one in which I have had to work on for may years still in progress especially as my children get older and  it becomes harder to not internalize their shitty attitude, but It is on the list of things to improve.

Self esteem and mutual respect helps to foster Mental Wellness with in our children. As a health care professional I always say when we can identify that something is not right it is only  at that time you can seek to improve and correct.

FIND OUT WHY YOU SHOULD BE ADDING PARSLEY TO YOUR GROCERY LIST

Hi  lovely readers it your girl  JA Nursing here, with  winter reaming it's ugly head, I will continue to look for alternatives solutions.  Be aware  that the information that  I provide does not replace  medical advice. The knowledge that I am giving you is at best, an empowerment tool. My goal is help you advocate for your self with your health care provider. Our services provide you with the convenient health coaching approach, which will enable use to feel empowered for the rest of your life.

During the fall and  winter chronic illness sufferers have a harder time with maintaining  a healthy life style. It's a fact that individuals sometimes become less active  when it is gloomy and cool outside.  Which can lead to increased arthritis flare ups, or difficulties keeping diabetes under control  due to  most people going back into old habits with those delicious comfort foods that tend to keep you warm in the winter.

I went on another search. Parsley is one of those herbs that I would say hold the same merit like thyme in  a West Indian household  minus the health benefits. Most of my Italian clients swear by parsley and it's benefits so let me share with you what I found. The health benefits of parsley include controlling cancer, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis, along with helping prevent osteoporosis. Furthermore, it acts as a pain reliever with anti-inflammatory properties. Parsley also provides relief from gastrointestinal issues such as indigestion, stomach cramps, bloating, and nausea, while helping to strengthen the immune system.  Parsley is the same like cilantro, used for garnishing and seasoning soups, stew and sauces. Nutritional Value Of Parsley Fresh Parsley is a nutritional powerhouse with vitamins A, B, C and K and the minerals iron and potassium.

Beyond water weight, parsley aids in balancing blood sugar, helping with long-term weight balance. It also plays a key role in preventing the degenerative effects of diabetes on the liver.
Here are five more reasons to include parsley in every meal:
1. Reduce your cancer risk
Eating parsley can reduce the risk of cancers such as breast, digestive tract, skin and prostate. Parsley contains high levels of a flavonoid called apigenin. Not only does apigenin possesses remarkable anti-cancer properties, it’s also a powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. apigenin is emerging as the toughest cancer fighter in the produce aisle. In addition to parsley, celery and artichokes, you'll find it in apples, cherries, grapes, chamomile tea and wine, and in herbs such as tarragon, cilantro, licorice, spearmint, basil and oregano.

2. Improve your immune function
Parsley may help to modulate the immune system. Parsley essential oil has been shown to suppress an over-stimulated immune response making it a key player in the fight against allergies, autoimmune and chronic inflammatory disorders.
3. Beat inflammation
detoxing parsley shakeParsley helps to reduce the pain and swelling associated with arthritis. Parsley contains a volatile oil called eugenol that has been shown in studies to have strong anti-inflammatory as well as anti-arthritic properties and can significantly suppress swelling in the joint.Parsley Parsley is gluten free, therefore, best herb to reduce the symptoms of allergies. Parsley has antibacterial and antifungal properties work as a cleaning agent and cure skin infection, acne, dark circles, and blemishes. Yeah!

4. Fight disease
Parsley offers protection from a wide variety of diseases – from atherosclerosis, diabetes and colon cancer to asthma! Parsley is an excellent source of vitamin C, which is a key nutrient in the processes that neutralizes the free radicals that play a key role in the development of these diseases. Parsley oil is also used as a face pack but always use it diluted otherwise it can burn your skin. Antioxidant in parsley prevents from free radical damage reduces the sign of early aging
5. Protect your blood vessels
Parsley is a good source of one of the most important B vitamins: folic acid. Folic acid helps to reduce homocysteine. Homocysteine is a naturally occurring amino acid in the body but high levels in the blood can damage blood vessels increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. This emerald green herb is popular among starlets who want to drop extra water weight before big events because it helps to reduce water retention and bloating (edema). It’s a natural diuretic, which helps to eliminate excess fluid without depleting the body of potassium.sodium including dietary fiber.

Always remember not everything that glitters is gold use  every thing in moderation. Consumption of parsley especially in large quantities, may have side effects and disadvantages. Some of them include the following:

Risky for Pregnant Women: The consumption of large quantities of parsley may induce uterine contractions during pregnancy. At any stage of pregnancy, this can be very risky. Large amounts of parsley are not safe for women who are breastfeeding. Avoiding excessive consumption of parsley during pregnancy and breastfeeding is strongly advised.

Oxalate Over-consumption: Parsley has a high quantity of oxalates. This high concentration can be particularly problematic for people who suffer from kidney stones.

Here’s an incredibly potent detox green smoothie for you that is also an excellent source of iron. It contains iron-rich greens like dandelion and parsley, which also facilitates detox.
Pineapple sweetens it up nicely while supplying the protein-digesting enzyme, bromelain.
I added the pear to help thicken it, if you don’t have pear you can always add apple. This smoothie is slightly bitter so if you’d prefer to have it even sweeter, then use a medium banana instead of pear or apple.
This smoothie is also full of fiber with 17.9 grams.
Pregnant women should not consume parsley. Parsley contains an essential oils called apiole. Apiole is a kidney stimulant. Because this essential oil can stimulate uterine contractions, pregnant women should avoid eating large quantities of it.

Iron-Rich Pineapple Detox Recipe

  • 1 cup fresh Italian parsley, chopped
  • 3 cups dandelion greens, chopped
  • 1 large pear, cored
  • 2 cups pineapple, cubed
  • 8 ounces of filtered water

Hi It's your  Girl JA Nursing here with a couple days left for Atoms Of Fashion  to hit The6ix Lets do a little review of Sickle Cell

Sickle Cell Disease (also called Sickle Cell Anemia) is a group of red blood cell disorders you have inherited and are born with.  Currently there is no universal cure for sickle cell disease.
It is something you will have your whole life, and need to learn how to live with it, so that you can continue living as normally as possible, with schooling, work, and family life. As it is inherited, you also need to know your partner’s Sickle Cell status as you could pass it onto your future children too.
 Get Your Tickets Today!!!!
http://www.eventbrite.com/o/atoms-of-fashion-8423131053

All races should be screened for this hemoglobin at birth.
A carrier of sickle cell disease is also said to have the sickle cell trait. This person has inherited a sickle cell gene from a parent, but does not have sickle cell disease and is not more likely to get sick than any other person. They do not need special medical care and will not develop sickle cell disease at any time in their life.
Why is it helpful to know that I am a carrier of sickle cell disease, or whether my child is a carrier?

Do You Know if  you  or your child has  sickle cell trait?   Is important for several reasons. When you are ready to have a family, your partner can have carrier testing so that you know, as a couple, if there is a chance of having a child with sickle cell disease. By having this information, you can let your child know if he or she is a carrier of sickle cell disease in the future.

October 19 2015 are you voting ? Make your Voice be Heard

L-R Lola AAaliyah -Sarah Fisher-Michelle Smith
Hi it's your girl JA Nursing here,  over the Last couple months I have have had the opportunity to  advocate for voting  at Youthday  Federal Election edition put on by  organizer Tylain Duggan of youth day.  Jane and Finch Votes Organized by Jamil  Javani Osgoode Law Professor. I also  had the opportunity  to attend a candidate  debate in  Etobicoke North  at Rexdale community Hub, which isespecially important to me because I grew up in Etobicoke  and  live in Etobicoke also known as Rexdale.  Canada’s 42nd federal election is on  Monday October 19 2015. Today many stations had coverage of individual candidates like.

It is  very important that you not only know which party you would like to represent you in this years Federal Election;  but  you must understand what each candidate individually represents for your area.

L-R Tylaine Duggan- Brooke Aaliyah -Dewitt Lee

http://itsbrookesworld.blogspot.ca/2015/09/youth-day-rock-vote-my-coverage-federal.html?m=1

So the burning question is who do you think will represents your area, your concerns and your needs.

The Liberal seven-point advantage continues over the federal election campaign's closing weekend, the latest tracking by Nanos Research for CTV News and the Globe and Mail shows.
According to numbers released on Oct. 18, the day before the election:
The Liberals have 37.3 per cent support nationally
The Conservatives have 30.5 per cent support nationally
The NDP has 22.1 per cent support nationally
The Greens are at 4.7 per cent support nationally
Poll respondents were asked "If a federal election were held today, could you please rank your top two current local voting preferences?"
Compared to a month ago, the responses show the Liberals up six points, the NDP down nine points, and the Conservatives up two points.

Up until the Thanksgiving Weekend, the Liberals and Conservatives were locked in a tight two-way race, pollster Nik Nanos told CTV News Channel on Sunday.
"We saw a two-way race going into Thanksgiving weekend," he said. "But after Thanksgiving weekend, after the pumpkin pie, the Liberals came out … with about a six-point advantage and they've been able to hold onto that advantage in the closing week of the campaign."
According to Nanos Research, the Liberals have benefited from a decline in NDP support over the course of the campaign.

"It took about 66 days for Canadians to figure out who the main challenger would be to (Conservative Leader) Stephen Harper, and it ended up being (Liberal Leader) Justin Trudeau," Nanos said. "The reality is that the NDP, although there's good will toward them, have been squeezed by strategic voters."
Nanos said the shift from NDP to Liberal support can be seen in the two parties' trend lines, which have been mirror images of each other in the last month.
"When the NDP went up, the Liberals went down, and when the Liberals went up, the NDP went down," he said. "So what we've seen is movement from the New Democrats towards the Liberals in order to block Stephen Harper."
Time for Action
We are going to make our voices heard in Canada's election. Please join us on October 19.2015

#JaneAndFinchVotes is a nonpartisan voter mobilization project in the Jane and Finch community. Our goal is to increase voter turnout from youth and their parents in the community. We are affiliated with Osgoode Hall Law School, Black Creek Community Health Centre, The Spot and other community organizations.
We believe that communities like Jane and Finch, which has one of the lowest voter turnout rates in Toronto but faces some of the starkest
inequalities in the city, need to have a louder voice in Canada's political process to ensure the community's needs are addressed.    #JaneAndFinchVotes   Read More  http://www.thestar.com/news/federal-election/2015/09/24/osgoode-law-school-class-targets-low-voter-turnout-in-jane-and-finch.html

Lamar Odem wakes up! Intervention Time

Hey It's your Girl JA Nursing here, well for the last couple of days  we have seen headlines like
Lamar Odom Went Off the Rails   Over 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians I had to weight in on the situation. Is this a Social issue, Mental health issue or a expected issue?  I don't know about you but the facts are the facts and then the reality is the reality. In my career I have seen this situation time and time again. I could blame situations but as a Nurse I see past the situation and look at the overall story.
According to reports from the hospital, doctors are still waiting to figure out if Khloe Kardashian's ex has sustained significant brain damage, which is a concern considering his coma and general condition following his apparent drug overdose at a Nevada brothel on Tuesday.
It appears Odom suffered an ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot prevents blood flow to the brain — and that kind of stroke is most typically associated with overdose patients, including those who have consumed cocaine. Accordingly, a source has revealed that "virtually every drug imaginable" has been found in Odom's system — scary!

Let's weight in on this  situation, This is not a weight in but a story of circumstances. We have to always be  aware that substance abuse an mental illness becomes a topic if we all just try to understand that many factors affect the outcomes for many.  I know we all would like to blame the Kardasians but this  incident stems  since childhood, the Queens, N.Y., native has traveled a rocky road. At age 12, Odom lost his mother to colon cancer. On Khloe & Lamar and to ESPN, Odom spoke of his father's struggle with heroin addiction. He went to live with his grandmother and later Jerry DeGregorio, the coach of his Rhode Island college team. To add to further to contributing factors to  lamor Odom  possible break down is the fact that he has  also suffered from   several incidents of  personal Loses.  Over the years the former Laker and Olympian has faced one painful loss after the other. Odom has two children, Destiny, 13, and Lamar Jr., 10, with his ex-girlfriend of over 10 years, Liza Morales. In 2006 the couple lost a third child, Jayden, to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.  On Tuesday, almost two decades later, Odom was found unresponsive in a brothel an hour outside of UNLV’s campus.

Reports of sited that many people  have tried to save  the NBA star from  tragedy, heartbreak, discord, and addiction that has plagued his life.    Many studies have confirmed that  Addiction is due 50 percent to genetic predisposition and 50 percent to poor coping skills.  They goal of advocacy is for the most part to address finding ways to help you with  literacy and navigation  for various different issues  including Mental Wellness also know has Mental Health.

Some may ask what is Addiction?
The word “addiction” is often used to refer to any behavior that is out of control in some way. People often describe themselves as being addicted to, for example, a TV show or shopping. The word is also used to explain the experience of withdrawal when a substance or behavior is stopped (e.g., “I must be addicted to coffee: I get a headache when I don’t have my cup in the morning”).
However, experiencing enjoyment or going through withdrawal do not in themselves mean a person has an addiction.
Because the term “addiction” is commonly used in such a vague way, there have been many attempts to define it more clearly. One simple way of describing addiction is the presence of the 4 Cs:
  • craving
  • loss of control of amount or frequency of use
  • compulsion to use
  • use despite consequences.
Why do people keep using?
There are  Numerous psychological factors can influence whether a person chooses to use substances, or whether this use leads to abuse and dependence. People with neurotic, addictive or risk-seeking personalities may be more likely to use substances. Alternatively, poor coping skills or negative thought may lead to substance use and abuse as a coping mechanism in response to stress or emotional turmoil.

Substance use can be hard to change. One thing that makes change so difficult is that the immediate effects of substance use tend to be positive. The person may feel good, have more confidence and forget about his or her problems.

The person may come to believe that he or she cannot function or make it through the day without drugs. When the person uses substances to escape or change how he or she feels, using can become a habit, which can be hard to break. Continued substance use, especially heavy use, can cause changes in the body and brain causing the person to develop physical dependence which makes it hard to stop using due the  distressing

A person who develops a  physical dependence and then stops using,  may experience distressing symptoms of withdrawal; These changes may explain why people continue to crave the substance long after they have stopped using, and why they may slip back into using or have a hard time deciding to stop.

What do you make of the situation?  this is not gossip but a chance for us all to understand that your Mental Wellness means  understanding your journey by understanding how you cope or finding ways to learn new coping mechanism.
This situation with Lamor is only a example of how stories can be publicized,  with one meaning but there's  more to consider. I would like to join the rest and say  screw the Kardashian's it's all their fault even as tempting as it is. With new reports  that Scott Disick has  entered rehab for the fourth time, after the terrible news of Lamor Odom. The 32-year-old ex of Kourtney Kardashian has sought treatment for drug and alcohol abuse in the past as well.

Many want to to use the Kardashian episode as the cause to this tragic  incident.  Health literacy, is a key component to helping individuals understand complicated health issues easier, by understanding contributing factors.

and a individual that has been through the struggles we can only be real about the situation.  I sited earlier that Lamor at a early age lost his Mother and had to deal with a Father with substance abuse so what to you expect?? this statement is not a yeah I told you so but It is a Yeah learn  to be the person that can understand the overall picture.

My prayers goes out to lamor and his family, but  as a  advocate with 15 years of  Nursing experience. This blog is for all families searching for answers.

This has been another segment from  Michelle Smith your  Health and Social Advocate. If you know some one that may be suffering  with substance abuse/Mental Health.  JA Nursing We Care Inc. is founded on the principle of navigating  you through your process. We stay with you because WE CARE. You can contact  Us for a assistance with navigation through your process

Hi Toronto it's your girl JA Nursing here,  with some exciting news.  For his first time in Canada, African-American author Derrick Jaxn aka the Self-Love Ambassador alongside Toronto’s own Makini Smith are joining forces to bring you an evening of intimate and intellectual conversations in "The Self Love Chronicles" (#TheSelfLoveChronicles) moderated by Karlyn Percil-Mercieca, Founder of the SisterTalk Group on Thursday, October 15th, 2015 at 7:00pm inside the Revival (783 College St., Toronto).

Derrick Jaxn is a celebrity lifestyle blogger and public speaker. He was recently featured on CNN, speaking on race relations and police brutality. He is a poet and author of top selling relationship books; A Cheating Man’s Heart, A Cheating Man’s Heart 2, and his most recent poetry book I Still Want It. Derrick’s mission is to restore people’s faith in love around the world. “His viral social media quotes and books are so empowering and uplifting that it was a no brainer to bring him out to our city to speak in an effort to renew people’s views on love, relationships, and well-being,” says Erika Enyolu, Founder of PR Diva Communications. With over 400,000 plus social media followers growing by the day, he is indeed getting his messages out loud and clear.

Makini Smith is a serial-entrepreneur, community activist, and author of her first published book A Walk In My Stilettos, on how she overcame adversity with determination and grace. She has been featured on numerous platforms for her wealth of knowledge and life experiences including: teen motherhood, divorce, relationships, single parenthood, and more. “Her story is so motivating and empowering to people out there who have been or are going through obstacles and challenges and how they can learn to break free from them. Her charisma, strength, and success through all the heartache she has been through highlighted in her book, is the main reason why we had to have her speak at our event alongside Derrick,” says Erika Enyolu. Makini was voted as 1 of 100 Black Women to Watch in Canada for 2015 and was recently honoured by Black Canadian Awards on their national wall of role models.

Karlyn Percil-Mercieca is the host and moderator of this event and is the Founder of the SisterTalk Group a women’s leadership network, where members have “Elephant Story” conversations on life, love, relationships & career. Through transformational workshops, meet-ups & SisterTalk Circles, members have conversations that elevate, celebrate and support women in life, love & their ambition. SisterTalk Group has been featured on Oprah's Lifesclass 3 times.

“With all the violence we see in the media and everyday lifestyle challenges that have either affected us or someone we love we need events like this to help build our faith, empower us and inspire us to be the best we can be for ourselves and others. As October is also observed nationally as Domestic Violence Awareness month this event really couldn’t have come at a better time,” says Erika Enyolu.

The Self Love Chronicles is being generously sponsored by Grace Foods Canada who is providing tropical treats, coupons, and recipes for the event’s swag bags. Caribbean Vibrations TV http://www.caribbeanvibrationstv.com/ is the event’s media sponsor that will be advertising and covering this event on their television series which can be viewed on the OMNI 1 channel – Cable 4.

Part of the proceeds from this event will be donated to the Women's Multicultural Resource & Counseling Centre of Durham (WMRCC) dedicated to providing specialized counseling and support to women of all ages, youth and children from diverse backgrounds, to eradicate violence, to re-build their lives, and to enable them to become contributing members of the society.
